Here’s a quick guide on how to set up a time tracker in Jira.

If time tracking is disabled by default, you may enable it following these steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Select Issues – Issue Features – Time Tracking.
  • Choose to Activate to enable time tracking.

Note:  You need to have access to make the mentioned changes.

After following this step, you’ll be able to see the time tracking field inside Jira issues where you can record time. (This simple configuration works for Jira server instances. If you want to disable time tracking on Jira Cloud, you have to dig deeper into Permissions Schemes or hide time tracking fields from your issue view.

To view the time spent as well as the time remaining for each task, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Open any Jira issue that you have already worked on (You can access issues through a variety of ways- via a project board, ‘Issues’ menu item, or inside a ‘Your work tab).
  2. In the issue view, see the ‘time tracking’ section. The progress bar will tell you how much time has been logged into this particular and its original estimation and remaining time.

  • Delete All Worklogs – it enables a user to delete all worklogs (including those added by others in the workforce);
  • Edit Own Worklogs – it allows a user to edit his/her own worklogs;
  • Edit All Worklogs allows one user to edit all worklogs (also those belonging to other users).

Note: For all team members to be able to access the information and track their time, the admin must grant them the ‘Work On Issues’ permission in their project. When making changes in the ‘Work On Issues’ setting, he/ she has to select the users, groups, or project roles that need to log work on issues.


Reports present the collected information about expected time, actually spent hours, and share insights for future decision making. To create a report, follow the steps listed below:

  1. Find the desired project and navigate to it via the menu.
  2. Check the sidebar and click Reports > Forecast & management section > Time Tracking Report.
  3. Select the version you need a report on from the Fix Version drop-down list. This way, the report will provide all issues from that particular version.
  4. Then, choose the sorting mode for the issues in the report from the Sorting drop-down list.
  5. Take out the issues to be included in the report from the Issues drop-down list (All/Incomplete.)
  6. If sub-tasks are enabled, choose the sub-tasks for parent issues (belonging to the version to include in the report) from the Sub-task Inclusion drop-down list.
